It all began on September 11, 2023, during one of Sudhir Chaudhary's shows. He covered a story about Karnataka government's Swawalambi Sarathi scheme, which aimed to provide subsidies to unemployed youth to help them purchase vehicles and become self-employed. However, he also stated that the benefits of this scheme would be exclusively available to the religious minority community, with no provision for the Hindu community.

As clips from the program went viral, the Karnataka government swiftly responded, labeling the story as fake news. They announced their intention to take legal action against Sudhir Chaudhary, asserting that the scheme included benefits for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) within the Hindu community as well.

In response to the government's stance, Sudhir Chaudhary addressed the issue in his program the following day. He pointed out that when the scheme was initially announced during the budget session, it was discussed in the context of SC and ST communities. However, the recent notification had limited its scope exclusively to the minority community.

On September 13, 2023, the Karnataka Police took action, accusing Sudhir Chaudhary of spreading misinformation among religious groups. Sudhir Chaudhary promptly challenged these allegations in the Karnataka High Court on September 14, 2023.

During the court proceedings, the Karnataka High Court noted that the statement seemed to suggest a prima facie case against Sudhir Chaudhary. However, given that all the relevant materials were already in the possession of the police, there was no immediate need for his arrest. The court scheduled a hearing for September 20, 2023, to further examine the case.
